The Ascent Yard Care Founding Story

The Ascent Yard Care Founding Story

-

gained employment with a large company in Victoria. I had learned so much on my journey only to end up working at a company that did not practice the high standards I had learned, they did mediocre work and to me, that was not right. I was on a mission to do incredible work and spend everyday at a company that believes in quality, a company that can create incredible gardens.

In the name of my mission I gave my employer my notice and left my job behind on February 2nd, 2017. That was the day Ascent Yard Care was born. My first handful of clients loved my work and told their friends, we grew and I recruited my most qualified peers, they believed in my mission as much as me. As of writing we have been solving our customers problems with a purpose for over seven years. We continue to strive toward our mission everyday.

At thirteen years old, I dreamed of a backyard vegetable garden. It seemed like a small ambition, but to me, it was a world of possibilities.

I spent that winter saving every penny I could. When spring finally arrived, I was ready. I broke ground in my backyard and built a garden bed, filled it with soil, and carefully planted my seeds. It felt like the beginning of something big.

But, it wasn't long before I was confronted with reality. Stepping out into my in garden, I saw struggling tomato vines, heads of lettuce devoured by pests, and weeds everywhere. My effort seemed wasted. I had dreamed of a bountiful garden, but all I saw was failure. I was in shambles.

Then, something changed. Biking my way to school the next day I looked up from my handlebars and saw a sign that drew me in, "Farm Fresh Organic Tomatoes, Strawberries, Broccoli". I peddled up the driveway where I met Dave Chambers of Madrona Farm, a second-generation organic farmer. I offered to volunteer in exchange for an apprenticeship. To my relief, Dave agreed, and I started volunteering after school and on Saturdays.

Under Dave's guidance, my garden and I began to transform. Each week, my skills grew, and so did my backyard garden. I saved up again, this time for books on soil science, fruit growing, tree pruning, and pest management. The more I learned, the more abundant my garden grew.

After starting my apprenticeship with Dave my garden began the thrive

One day Dave took me to Butchart Gardens. I was enthralled. The gardens were like nothing I'd ever seen - colourful, grand, and beautifully designed. I looked out over the gardens and thought to myself, "This is what I want to create."

The awe-inspiring beauty of the gardens drove me towards greater goals.

After receiving my high school diploma, I took up horticulture training and learned how to create gardens that were not just alive, but thrived with beauty. I was learning all the best secrets of plant selection, design and proper lawn and garden care.

Just as a garden requires patience and care to grow, our dreams need time and dedication to flourish.

I continued my education and took up arborist training, learning tree biology and proper tree care. I was making amazing discoveries in pruning techniques and urban canopy management. I couldn't wait to use my newfound knowledge in the field.

But it was not long before I faced my ordeal. The company I worked for didn't practice the high standards I'd learned, their work was mediocre, and it struck me: I had to start a company that believed in quality, a company that could create outstanding gardens.

Formal horticulture and arborist training, the key part of my journey to achieving expertise.

So, in February of 2017 with a mix of excitement and nerves, I put in my notice and left my job behind. That was the day Ascent Yard Care was born, with the mission to create outstanding gardens for our clients.

The beginning of Ascent Yard Care.

It wasn't easy. There were new challenges, setbacks, and lessons. But every step was worth it. My first handful of clients loved my work and told their friends, we grew and I recruited my most qualified peers, they believed in my mission as much as me.
