The Manual Removal Myth: Why We Are Losing the War on Weeds (And How to Actually Win)
By: Jake Innes, Owner/Arborist, Ascent Yard Care
There is a strange phenomenon in Southwest BC. Strata councils, commercial landlords, and homeowners are collectively pouring millions of dollars into a strategy that is scientifically proven to fail.
That strategy is manual weed removal.
Somewhere along the line, manual removal became the accepted "moral" standard for vegetation management. We convinced ourselves that paying a crew to scratch at the surface of the soil with hoes and hands was the only responsible way to maintain a property.
There is absolutely no logic behind it. It is widely accepted only because "it’s what everyone else does."
The Definition of Insanity
Manual removal of aggressive perennials—specifically Morning Glory, Horsetail, Buttercup, Bamboo, and Blackberry—is ineffective, labor-intensive, and exorbitantly expensive.
When you pull these plants, you are often leaving the rhizome (the root system) intact. In many cases, the physical disturbance actually stimulates the plant to grow back more aggressively. You are paying for labor today that guarantees you will have to pay for the same labor again next month. That is not maintenance; that is a subscription to failure.
The Green Invasion
This isn't just about saving money or keeping a driveway clean. It is about protecting our ecosystem.
Our beloved cities, towns, and forests are under siege. We are being overrun by "Green Invaders"—aggressive species that choke out native flora, destroy wildlife habitats, and compromise infrastructure. Blackberry consumes ravines; Knotweed destroys foundations; Bamboo ignores property lines.
Trying to fight a biological invasion with manual labor is like trying to stop a flood with a bucket. To protect our environment, we need to stop being sentimental and start being effective.
Stewardship Through Science
At Ascent Yard Care, we have stopped pretending that manual removal works. We solve the problem using targeted, systemic eradication.
There is a misconception that "herbicide" means "scorched earth." That is outdated thinking. Modern vegetation management is surgical. We apply specific treatments that are absorbed by the leaves of the target plant. The treatment works its way through the vascular system (the veins), traveling down to kill the root system entirely.
One treatment does what ten years of manual pulling cannot: it solves the problem.
Safety and Compliance
We care deeply about wildlife. We care about our waterways. We care about the families who live on these properties.
Because we know what we are doing, we utilize products and methods that are:
• Targeted: We affect the weed, not the surrounding plants.
• Safe: The products evaporate and dry within 30 minutes. Your dogs and kids can be back in the yard the same day.
• Clean: There is no runoff, no leaching into waterways, and zero residual soil activity.
• Compliant: We operate with strict adherence to provincial and municipal regulations.
My Duty to Solve the Problem
It is my duty to solve this problem for the tens of thousands of property owners in this region. Whether it is a Strata parking lot being destroyed by weeds or a residential garden being strangled by Morning Glory, the solution is not more manual labor.
We don’t want our land overrun by invaders. We want our native plants and our investments to thrive.
Stop throwing money at a method that doesn't work. Embrace the science, save your equity, and let us win the war on weeds for you.
